Young Indians Ahmedabad to Organise City’s First Operational net-zero Garba

AHMEDABAD, GUJARAT | 14th OCTOBER 2026 | Young Indians (Yi), Ahmedabad Chapter, will organise its annual Garba celebration on October 15 with climate action as its central theme. The event will focus on reducing the environmental impact of festivities through waste management, tree plantation, recycling and more responsible travel.

The initiative is the city’s first operational net-zero Garba, with plans to measure the event’s carbon footprint and undertake targeted actions to reduce and offset its environmental impact. Yi Ahmedabad aims to encourage citizens to adopt more conscious choices and make climate action a part of everyday life.

Darshan Parikh, chairperson of Yi Ahmedabad, said, “Navratri is one of the most dynamic festivals in Gujarat and brings people together in large numbers, making it a perfect occasion to encourage practical action on climate change. Through this initiative, we want to show that celebrations can be vibrant, inclusive and environmentally responsible at the same time. We hope people will carry these habits beyond the event and into their everyday lives.”

As part of the initiative, Yi will plant at least one tree for every Garba pass sold. Collection drives for electronic waste and pre-loved household items will also be organised across the city to encourage recycling and reuse.

At the venue, food and organic waste will be segregated and sent for composting. Suitable surplus food will be distributed to people in need through non-governmental organisations (NGOs), helping minimise food wastage. Moreover, the the event décor will be minimalistic and reusable, further reducing resource consumption and unnecessary waste.

Recognising that travel can contribute significantly to an event’s carbon footprint, participants will be encouraged to carpool or use shared transportation wherever possible to help reduce carbon emissions.

The initiative aims to bring environmental considerations into a popular celebration and encourage greater public participation in sustainability efforts. By combining traditional festivities with practical measures to manage waste and reduce emissions, Yi Ahmedabad hopes to promote more environmentally responsible events in the city. The event will take place at Seven Seas Party Plot, near Science City Circle, Ahmedabad.
